Make a Roblox murder mystery, from secret roles to the last round
Murder mystery is Roblox's social game: innocents, a sheriff, a hidden killer, and three minutes to work out who is lying. It fits in a single map and a few rules, but every rule must be fair. Here is what makes a good round, the systems expected, and the prompt to give Builblox to build it inside your Roblox Studio.
What makes a good round
The fun comes from doubt. The killer must be able to strike unseen, the sheriff must be able to get it wrong, and the innocents must have something to do: collect coins, find clues, run. A map with corners and corridors, uneven light and several floors gives all three roles their chances. The round stays short, three minutes, so losing costs little.
Role drawing must feel fair: a player who was innocent five rounds running must have a better chance of being the killer, and the game should say so.
The systems players expect
Builblox's plan for a murder mystery covers these elements. Check them before starting the build.
- A lobby and 3-minute rounds, with a countdown and a results screen.
- Weighted role drawing: killer, sheriff, innocents.
- A throwable knife for the killer, a gun for the sheriff, and the gun dropping on the sheriff's death.
- Coins to collect, a shop of knife and gun skins.
- Several maps drawn and voted between rounds.
- DataStore saves of coins, wins per role and skins.
The full prompt to give Builblox
Spell out the rules of each role, including what happens when the sheriff gets it wrong: that is where rounds get interesting. Copy this prompt and change the maps.
Build a round-based murder mystery. Core loop: each 3-minute round, the server picks one killer, one sheriff, and leaves everyone else innocent. Innocents survive or pick up the fallen sheriff's gun; the sheriff hunts the killer; the killer eliminates everyone without being seen. Systems: - A lobby, a 15-second countdown, the round, then the roles-revealed screen - Weighted drawing: a player innocent several rounds running has a better chance of being picked - A knife for the killer, thrown or melee, with a 3-second cooldown - A gun for the sheriff that kills in one shot; shooting an innocent kills the sheriff too; the gun drops on the sheriff's death and can be picked up - Coins spawning around the map, 1 each, to buy skins - 2 maps: a 2-floor mansion and a night train station, voted between rounds - A HUD: role, time left, coins, players left Progression: coins, wins per role and skins saved with DataStore. Monetisation: gamepass for glowing knife skins and an emote, developer product for a coin pack.
Iterating in the chat
Play a few rounds with friends: that is where you see a killer that is too strong or a sheriff who always wins. Then ask in the chat: "the thrown knife should take 5 seconds to recharge", "add a third map in a school", "show everyone the killer's role at the end of the round". Builblox reads what exists in your place and changes only what you ask. A failed step is undone with Ctrl+Z.
Monetising your murder mystery
Murder mystery monetises almost entirely through skins: knives, guns, throw effects, emotes, and crates opened with in-game coins. Developer products sell coins; a gamepass can offer double coins or an extra skin slot. Never sell the chance of being the killer: that rule is what holds the game together. Builblox writes the shop and its server check; gamepasses and products are created in the Roblox Creator Dashboard and you paste their ids.
Frequently asked questions
How many players does a round need?
Set it in the prompt, for instance "the round starts from 3 players". Below that, the lobby waits and says so. To test alone, ask for a test mode that starts a round with one player.
Are the maps built too?
Yes, as parts and models placed in your Workspace, with spawn points, lights and props. You can then edit them by hand or import your own models.
